Exceptional breakfast, wine cellar and spa facilities. Would have been great to have more communal quiet spaces, perhaps a library or smoking room to play board games etc.
The Casaldronho Wine Hotel is a luxurious 4 star hotel located in the heart of the Douro Wine Region.

A friendly welcome, and a nice clean, comfortable hotel close to the historic centre. A good restaurant for dinner, and possibly the best breakfast during our 2 weeks in Portugal. The welcome drink was a nice touch.
Viscondes da Varzea is a charming hotel set in an aristocratic country manor dating back to the 17th century.

This is an incredibly beautiful property - from the grounds covered in fruit trees (we saw oranges, lemons, peaches and cherries) to the imposing and rather at inspiring rooms in the main house, everything is a feast for the eyes.
Our room was a short walk away from the main house, with a slightly obstructed view of the grounds and hills. The bed was comfortable, and the toilet was large and well equipped (yay, bidet!).
The breakfast spread is pretty good - hams, cheese, (good) breads, fresh fruit, and more.
The buffet dinner was good. Some reviewers have it's not worth the 40 euros per person, but I think the fancy table experience and the time and effort saved in not having to drive to a restaurant alone make up. The food isn't outstanding, but it's plenty good enough.
The staff are all superb. Warm, friendly, helpful - everything you want, and absolutely nothing you don't.
Highly recommended!

Geographically Lamego is in a hollow. As I approached from the south in full sun in December you could see Lamego covered in mist, cold damp mist. It lasted for my 3 day stay and the sun was only visible as I left and approached the Duro River!
The accommodation was dia and the highlight was the cheerful taxi driver to took me out!!
Limited walking as two routes were terminated by loose snarling dogs!

Very pretty city, could have spent more time just hanging out and getting to know the city and way of life. If you are there just to walk to the top of the steps to see the cathedral, then one day is sufficient.

We stayed for 2 nights and enjoyed the amazing view, the park like garden, the heated indoor swimming pool. The breakfast was great so was our room which was very spacious. The bed was very comfortable and the view from our private terrace was amazing.
There was no restaurant on site so that meant having to drive into Lamego for dinner. We had a car so that didn’t bother us.
We would definitely stay again.

Do not miss the Sanctuario Nossa Senhora dos Remedios.
Do not miss the Sanctuario Nossa Senhora dos Remedios. Beautiful church built on top of a hill overlooking Lamego. Multiple terraces adorned with traditional Portuguese blue and white tiles lead up and down the property. One of the most beautiful places I have been to. I am surprised that the church is not talked about more often as a major attraction in the Duoro Valley.

We really enjoyed walking and visiting the towers, castles and churches it was like a travel back in time. Also because of the proximity we could take a boat tour in the Douro river. We drove from Lamego to Peso da Régua then by train to Pinhão to finish with a 2hrs boat tour.
Another unique experience was to drive on the N222. According to Avis who has crowned Portugal's N-222 as 'the road that offers the best driving experience in the world. From Peso da Régua to Pinhão.
With plenty of cafés, restaurants and bars food and drinks are there for you to choose. Is worth to know that after 22:00 most restaurants are closed but there are some like "O Cortelheiro" na rua das Cortes is open until 2:00am and you can have much more than a sandwiche.
Probably the most impressive hotel we've stayed in when considered as a package (building, gardens, views, staff, facilities, food, activities, etc). It doesn't come cheap, but in our opinion absolutely worth it as a special treat. The activity programme was excellent (cooking classes, wine tours, spa treatments), the staff has been trained to the highest standard (many in nearby Lamego) and the vineyard/river setting was extremely relaxing. Very special
We loved everything about our stay here. Amazing view. Affordable. Very peaceful and the 2 people who work there were wonderful. We only stayed here for 2 days out of our 11 day stay but I really wish we would of stayed here longer. Check out was at noon and we stayed until noon because I didn’t want to leave. My daughter stayed at a nearby 5 star hotel and I liked our place much better the herbs and I am glad I made the choice to stay here.
The location was perfect…. quiet and picturesque, just outside of Lamego and close to the Duro river and wine region. The staff were friendly, helpful in suggesting restaurants, and most accommodating to our requests. The breakfast was wonderful and beautifully served. The view absolutely gorgeous and the wine superb.
Great views, newly rennovated, peaceful quiet location, loads of good wine in the area, lovely pool
We didn’t have a car but the hotel owners helped us by booking taxis so worked out really well
Glass of wine on check in was nice and always available to bring beer and snacks
Flawless stay 👏🏼
All the staff was very friendly. I was travelling by Moto doing the famous Portugal N2 route and they took a special care to look after the moto that was parked outside the hotel. Very well located in the historic city center, enough parking outside and plenty of places to eat.
Modern hotel with stunning views from every room, across the Douro River valley. Parking outside the door. Great meals and (mostly) very friendly, helpful staff. We enjoyed it so much, we extended our stay by a day. It was fun having a pool table to while away a rainy day.
The view and facilities in the hotel were even better than the photos. The hotel's elevated position overlooking the river was superb and the pool area beautiful. The restaurant was also surprisingly good, we had one of the best meals of our holiday here.
Spectacular rooms(superior) and views...wonderful living room kitchen in shared new quarters. All brand new, beautiful architecture and design overlooking vineyards. Only 20 min to Duoro River in Lamego. We loved it. Nice pool. Would definitely return.
We are very grateful to the owner Zilda for her exceptional hospitality. The house ls located in historical center of Lamego and beautifully renovated. The view from rooftop terrace is fantastic as well as the breakfast. Thank you, Zilda!
The hotel is nice and comfortable. My room was huge and very clean also had beautiful views of the Douro. The breakfast was good. But unfortunately, if you need internet I do not recommend staying here. Everything else was very good.
The view of the Lamego valley from our room was terrific. We loved taking a steam and swimming in the pool to stretch and relax at the end of a long day. The restaurant was very good too for both dinner and breakfast.
The location is amazing and excellent breakfast. Staff were very friendly and helped me with my bags and getting on the WIFI on check in. I thought it was good value and I really enjoyed my time in Lamego!
One of the best-managed hotels I ever stayed. The facility is wonderful and the staff is very friendly and helpful. If you consider a hotel in Lamego, don't think twice, this is the best option !
The quinta is amazingly beautiful with a great view over the douro valley. Fernando was such a lovely, attentiv host!! It was totally the best accommodation we had on our whole Portugal trip!!
